According to a report by Business Insider, Elon Musk is reportedly moving ahead with plans for an AI project at Twitter. Two anonymous sources familiar with the company have disclosed that the Twitter CEO recently acquired around 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) for use on the platform.
GPUs are typically used in large-scale AI models due to their extensive computational power requirements. This development follows Musk's tweet on March 18, in which he stated that the company plans to use AI to "detect & highlight manipulation of public opinion" on Twitter. The anonymous sources have described the project as being in its early stages, but the purchase of such a significant quantity of GPUs indicates Musk's commitment to the project. One of the sources has indicated that the project works with a large language model. However, the exact role of generative AI at Twitter remains unclear.

In addition to the GPU purchase, Twitter has also acquired new talent with extensive backgrounds in the AI field. In March, engineers Igor Babuschkin and Manuel Kroiss joined Musk's team after working with DeepMind, an AI research subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company. These developments have emerged only a few weeks after Musk signed an open letter, along with thousands of other researchers in the tech space, calling for a temporary halt in AI development due to the risk it poses to humanity.

Musk has been a vocal advocate for AI regulation, warning regulators in a 2017 event with the United States National Governors Association that AI research needs to be regulated "before it's too late." The recent acquisitions and purchases show Musk's continued interest in AI development and his determination to use it for positive impact while recognizing its potential risks.
