MicroStrategy, the prominent corporate Bitcoin investor led by Michael Saylor, continued its aggressive Bitcoin buying strategy last week. Although the company reduced its buying pace, its recent purchase, made between December 16 and 22, was its smallest acquisition since July 2024. MicroStrategy acquired 5,262 BTC, investing around $561 million.
This latest purchase is significant for MicroStrategy as it acquired Bitcoin at an average price of $106,662 per BTC—its highest purchase price ever. This reflects the company’s strategy of purchasing Bitcoin even at elevated prices. Despite paying a premium for these coins, MicroStrategy remains firmly committed to its long-term Bitcoin accumulation plan.
As of December 22, 2024, MicroStrategy and its subsidiaries hold a total of 444,262 BTC, valued at approximately $27.7 billion. The average purchase price of these holdings is $62,257 per BTC. Through consistent buying, MicroStrategy has solidified its position as one of the world’s largest institutional Bitcoin holders, demonstrating Saylor’s vision of Bitcoin as a reliable store of value.
This most recent purchase is part of a series of large acquisitions in December, totaling 42,162 BTC. These purchases, worth about $4 billion at current prices, make up 12% of MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin purchases for the month. However, the latest buy is notably smaller than previous ones, being 191% smaller than the December 16 purchase and 309% smaller than the December 9 buy.
Rumors suggest that MicroStrategy may enter a blackout period in January 2025, during which it would pause issuing shares or convertible bonds for further Bitcoin acquisitions. Despite this potential hiatus, Saylor’s commitment to Bitcoin remains resolute. Earlier in December, he declared his intention to keep purchasing Bitcoin even if the price reaches $1 million per coin.
