Software developer Peter Todd has dismissed HBO's documentary *Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery*, which claims he is Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, as nothing more than a "marketing ploy" aimed at promoting filmmaker Cullen Hoback’s latest work. Todd criticized the documentary, stating that if proper research had been conducted, Hoback would have reached a different conclusion regarding the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator.
Todd’s rejection of the documentary echoes the broader sentiment within the cryptocurrency community. Many Bitcoin enthusiasts have expressed frustration with Hoback's assertions, with some accusing the filmmaker of not meeting basic journalistic standards. In a statement published by Bloomberg, Todd voiced concerns that the documentary could pose serious risks to his safety.
"Obviously, falsely accusing someone of having tens of billions of dollars puts them at risk of robbery and kidnappings. He’s putting my life at risk to promote his movie,” Todd said. Some industry experts believe that revealing the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto could have significant implications for the cryptocurrency market. However, Alex Momot, founder and CEO of Peanut Trade, downplayed these concerns, arguing that Nakamoto was likely aware of the risks and took precautions to remain anonymous.
“Many people will always be curious about Satoshi’s identity because human nature is drawn to mysteries,” Momot explained. He also highlighted the various conspiracy theories surrounding Nakamoto, including speculation that intelligence agencies might have played a role in Bitcoin’s creation. Momot added that the idea of Nakamoto’s death seems more plausible than other theories.
Ivan Manchev, head of marketing at Ambire, weighed in on the ongoing fascination with Nakamoto’s identity, suggesting that this reflects the broader significance of Bitcoin for society. When asked about the public’s obsession with unmasking Nakamoto, Manchev likened the mystery to cultural figures like Banksy, who represents rebellion, or Shakespeare, who embodies artistic genius. “In the same way, Satoshi symbolizes financial freedom, born out of one of the greatest financial crises of our time,” Manchev said, adding that it is easy to see why the story has taken on a cult-like status.
Both Manchev and Momot agree that newer Bitcoin users are less interested in Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity, focusing more on the practical applications of the technology. They suggest that only those deeply involved in the cryptocurrency industry are likely to remain curious about who Nakamoto really is.
